I don't even know what this is, I guess it's a fic? I am indeed such a giant nerd that not only do I own the Babylon 5 Security Manual, I have written it an appendix. About zombies. You never know, it could happen. People ought to be prepared.

Someone has to think of these things. )

Please accept this IOU for one (1) Babylon 5 vid -- my aging computer has finally decided that vidding is no longer within its capabilities, and decided to crash every time I laid a clip down on the timeline. *sigh* Instead, I present to you one (1) fanmix, consisting of several songs I would vid if I could and several others I had never thought of vidding before but probably could if I put my mind to it. (That is the point of a mix, right? To make a list of songs you don't have time to vid so they'll stop bothering you?)

Greetings! For my first post here this month I'm offering a little bit of meta, just some thoughts on the nature of the universe in B5 that I've been chewing over for a while.

I used to think it was awful that life wasn't fair. And then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe. --Marcus Cole, "A Late Delivery from Avalon"

I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] matociquala a little while ago about the nature of the universe in Criminal Minds (a show that has a few little connections to Babylon 5 -- "Tabula Rasa" in season three has a lot in common with "Passing Through Gethsemane," and there was a scene that seems like a reference to "Comes the Inquisitor" in last season's "Omnivore"), and to be honest I can no longer remember the point I intended to make when I said, "I'm thinking in terms of Babylon 5, where when really horrible things happen to someone, they usually did it to themselves." It was kind of a damning statement in that discussion, where we were talking about how much we liked the reliably arbitrary and unfeeling (read: realistic) nature of the CM universe, and I've been chewing over that statement for a long time since I made it.

spoilers for all of B5 ahead. )

I expect I'm missing something, as I usually do when I'm writing meta like this; I'd love to know what other people think.

Item 4436, Untitled and Uncredited Needlework Sampler, approx. 400-450 years old. Needlecraft has been a much-neglected form of Centauri folk-art, possibly because it fell out of fashion after the first few centuries of the Republic and modern examples are scarce to nonexistent. Too, needlework seems to have been exclusively the domain of females, and as such held little status among Centauri art pieces. Nevertheless, many examples do exist from personal collections, such as this, donated to this museum by the House of Cotto. This particular example is interesting for its portrayal of the legendary meeting of the first Centauri Emperor with the so-called "Technomage." While the story frequently describes three Technomages, this sampler depicts only one, possibly for reasons of aesthetic design. The meaning of the glyph is unclear. The limited use of thread-of-gold in the border informs us that the stitcher was of a second- or third-tier House; examples from more prominent families would include much heavier use of gold and possibly other precious metals as well.

This vid has kicked my ass for a month, but it is totally, in all ways, completely worth it. And I made it for y'all, because if this fandom did not exist I would not have the motivation to do awesome things like this. <3

I signed up with every intention of doing something character-themed, with meta and icons and what have you, thinking that surely I'd be able to pick a character with a month to think about it, but no, I was wrong. Instead, I decided to go with some generalized B5 love on the topic of religion and the religious people on B5; with any luck, my computer will be accessable enough by later this afternoon that I'll be able to get you some icons to go with it as well. But in the meantime, meta.

Remember: meta is only as good as the discussion that follows it! Agree with me, argue with me, whatever you want, but I'd love to have something come of this. :)
