Well, it's not technically the 17th anymore in Australia - but I figure I can get away with it since I think it's still yesterday afternoon in about half of the world?  Anyhow, I have a fic for my day.

Title: Turn Again
Pairing(s)/Character: Marcus/Susan, a bit of Franklin
Summary: Mid season 5 (Day of the Dead, to be exact) Susan is forced to stop in at Babylon 5 for repairs and the Brakiri seem to be celebrating some sort of holiday.  (yes, it is the obligatory DotD fic.  Everyone should write one ;-)
Rating & Warnings: NC-17 rated for sexual content.
Author's Notes: Most of this fic was written several years ago, so I apologise if it’s a bit rough.  It has also not been beta read thus all mistakes are mine and mine alone.  It is in fact part of a much longer work that will likely never be finished now.  But never say never, I guess – one day I might go back to it.

Greetings! For my first post here this month I'm offering a little bit of meta, just some thoughts on the nature of the universe in B5 that I've been chewing over for a while.

I used to think it was awful that life wasn't fair. And then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe. --Marcus Cole, "A Late Delivery from Avalon"

I was talking with [livejournal.com profile] matociquala a little while ago about the nature of the universe in Criminal Minds (a show that has a few little connections to Babylon 5 -- "Tabula Rasa" in season three has a lot in common with "Passing Through Gethsemane," and there was a scene that seems like a reference to "Comes the Inquisitor" in last season's "Omnivore"), and to be honest I can no longer remember the point I intended to make when I said, "I'm thinking in terms of Babylon 5, where when really horrible things happen to someone, they usually did it to themselves." It was kind of a damning statement in that discussion, where we were talking about how much we liked the reliably arbitrary and unfeeling (read: realistic) nature of the CM universe, and I've been chewing over that statement for a long time since I made it.

spoilers for all of B5 ahead. )

I expect I'm missing something, as I usually do when I'm writing meta like this; I'd love to know what other people think.
