Captain Sinclair's favorite poem:

Ulysses
~By Alfred, Lord Tennyson

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me.
I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: All times I have enjoy'd
Greatly, have suffer'd greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone, on shore, and when
Thro' scudding drifts the rainy Hyades
Vext the dim sea: I am become a name;
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known; cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honour'd of them all;
And drunk delight of battle with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethro'
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and forever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
Little remains: but every hour is saved
From that eternal silence, something more,
A bringer of new things; and vile it were
For some three suns to store and hoard myself,
And this gray spirit yearning in desire
To follow knowledge like a sinking star,
Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.

This is my son, mine own Telemachus,
To whom I leave the sceptre and the isle,—
Well-loved of me, discerning to fulfil
This labour, by slow prudence to make mild
A rugged people, and thro' soft degrees
Subdue them to the useful and the good.
Most blameless is he, centred in the sphere
Of common duties, decent not to fail
In offices of tenderness, and pay
Meet adoration to my household gods,
When I am gone. He works his work, I mine.

There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail:
There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,
Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me—
That ever with a frolic welcome took
The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honour and his toil;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep
Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

My favorite episode and why

I guess my very favorite was “Sleeping in Light” because it was a bittersweet end to a wonderful ride.

I came to Babylon 5 in the late 90s or early 2000s, after the show was done and Crusade was cancelled as well. Hubby and I watched the show on the Syfy Channel every night at 7pm until it was done and I lost my heart to Earth’s Last Best Hope.

I have rewatched several times and been active in the fandom ever since. I mod groups still, have a tiny B5 Facebook page and still write a little fanfiction.

This episode is the one that gets to me… the end. Many of you know one reason. My daughter went out for a Sunday drive 13 years ago and never returned either. I always think of her when John tells Delenn about the tradition of the Sunday drive when he was growing up. I normally have to leave the room during that scene.

The beauty of the 5 year arc is there is an ending and sometimes we all crave a little closure in our lives. And as Susan Ivanova said, "It gave up hope that there can always be new beginnings, even for people like us."

It was even a little like reading Tolkien - an epic story that you never wanted to end though you knew it would.

You also gotta love JMS turning out the lights on the station for the last time, too.

This is the preferred watching order of the series from The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5. People at FB and other groups are always asking for the order! Now go to Amazon and watch if you're in the US.

The Second Coming
By William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

The pak’ma’ra

I decided to write a small thing about one of the funniest and most interesting aliens – the pak’ma’ra.
12_Pac_Ma_Ra

They are ugly – not really any other word for it. Michael Garibaldi said they look like "an octopus that got run over by a truck." They are carrion eaters though they do state at one point that "pak'ma'ra are chosen of God... very special. We can eat of all the creatures who walk and fly and crawl... but not of the fish in the sea." So fish are safe!

They were often the butt of jokes on B5, but I do remember a few things – This is the rest of what was said about them by Vir in Sleeping in Light when he came to see Sheridan:
Vir: "That too, but .. one day Londo and I were walking past their quarters .. and we heard them .. singing."
"Singing? They can sing?" asked Sheridan.
"There's nothing about that in the literature," said Dr. Franklin.
"Apparently," Vir continued, "it's something they only do certain times of the year as part of their religious ceremonies. You may not believe this, but it was the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. I couldn't make out the words, but I knew it was full of sadness and hope and wonder and .. terrible sense of loss. I looked at Londo and -- this is the amazing part -- there was a tear running down his face. I said: 'Londo, we should leave.' And 'This is upsetting you.' He just stood there and listened. And when it was over he turned to me and he said: 'There are 49 gods in our pantheon, Vir. To tell you the truth I never believed in any of them. But if only one of them exists, then god sings with that voice.' "

I was also struck by them being Anla’shok. They were ill suited to the training and most of the discipline but were so ignored by all other species that they made the perfect spies, curriers and intelligence agents.

They were ugly, lumpy and had a hive mind but they were still part of the league of Non-Aligned Worlds and later members of the Interstellar Alliance.

I always wondered if they were the singers in the One Perfect Moment bit with Sheridan and Kosh… you really can’t tell what the monks looked like.

And JMS said their names were lower case by design!

Some of my favorite quotes, in no particular order:

“Understanding is a three edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth.” – Kosh

Captain John Sheridan: ”I wish I had your faith in the universe. I just don't see it.”
Delenn: ”Then I will tell you a great secret, Captain. Perhaps the greatest of them all. The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff. We are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out. And as we have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective.”

There comes a time when you look into the mirror, and you realize that what you see is all that you will ever be. Then you accept it, or you kill yourself. Or you stop looking into mirrors. -- Londo Mollari

“There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way.
The war we fight is not against powers and principalities; it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.”
-- G’kar

You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe. -- Marcus Cole

"Never eat anything bigger than your head. Never shoot pool at a place called Pop's. Never eat food at a place called Mom's." Matthew Gideon

"Can not run out of time. There is infinite time. You are finite. Zathras is finite. This...is wrong tool... No... No, not good. No... Never use that." -- Zathras

The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote. -- Kosh

Exeter: This is how the world ends, swallowed in fire, but not in darkness. You will live on. The voice of all our ancestors, the voice of our fathers and our mothers to the last generation. We created the world we think you would've wished for us. And now we leave the cradle for the last time.[
