Day 17 - Crafts - Delenn sock doll

So I had a couple of fic ideas rattling around in my head, but none of them would quite coalesce.

However, I also make dolls! So I thought I would put together a cute cuddly Delenn doll for all of you. This one has the green velvet dress, though someday I may make her another change of clothes (probably the one muccamukk and I have taken to calling "Delenn's bi pride flag dress," with the blue and pink and purple).

She is about 8" or 10" tall; her body is made from a white crew sock that I dyed with tea. Her hair is yarn and so is her crest--I actually had no idea how I was going to make the crest until Mucca suggested crocheting it. I think it worked fairly well.

She is VERY cuddly. :D

Thank you so much! I've done that style of hair before (often in bigger/thicker ringlets, but this seemed like a decent way to show long curly hair) but I was really surprised at how well the crest turned out!

How did you manage the curvature on the face? is it just pull in the eyes super tight or is there some other trick you've used to make the nose/mouth portion stick out?

For the face, pulling the eyes in a bit helps (for a Minbari it gives a hairless-eyebrows effect that's way more appropriate on them than on most people, I think!).

But the main thing is the nose--I take a little wad of stuffing and ball it up (tack it to itself with a few stitches to hold it together) and then tuck it in the front of the face while I'm stuffing the doll. It makes just enough of a bulge to give the face a bit of depth, especially in combination with the eyes. :D

They are SUPER fun. One of these days I'll do a post with some more pictures (I've done a bunch of other dolls) and maybe even basic instructions if I'm ambitious!

Ahh clever trick with the nose! I'm excited for more pics and if you ever get around to it, an instructions post, for sure. :D

Thank you! I thought at first that I couldn't do it because I don't have the right fabrics for most of Delenn's outfits, but then I realized I had the green velvet (originally sourced for the Eighth Doctor :D) and it's a pretty simple dress after that.

The hair twists are a great solution when you don't want to have raw ends of yarn showing--and super easy to do. (Twist a bunch of strands of yarn, then let it double back on itself, and tack down the ends.)

I love this so very much! <3 Both her crest!! and the vertical slit pupils in very round eyes. (It's basically like going "trust me, I have round eyes... they just happen to be equipped to be suited for noctural hunting". Very commendable characterization for this particular lady, if you ask me.)

Please tell me you're planning to make her some company. Please!

It's not healthy for her to be alone. It doesn't really matter who, but she needs someone to make sure she's not lonely! <3

That's a start. :) I hope she'll get more company anyway. The doctor is chronically unreliable when it comes to companions and we know Delenn hates being ditched.

Hee, yes, that's my favourite shot as well--I took it to try to show a detail of the hair and the crest, but it just turned out so jaunty and cute! :D

I didn't think of that when I was doing the eyes (those were just the only green-ish buttons I had) but it does totally fit with Delenn, doesn't it? Pastel on the outside, will cut you off at the knees if you cross her...LOL.

She is right now hangin' out with the Doctor (they both have the same yarn for hair and forest green velvet clothing, lol) but if I ever give him a universe-appropriate companion I'll be sure to post it. :D

So I hear - and I'll be delighted to hear about universe-appropriate companions. Say... Mayan, maybe? Or Susan? Lennier? Jeff? (All of them?) But it's okay if it takes a couple of years if she's got company for now. Just let me know if it ever happens? Please? :)

I'd been doing some textured crochet stuff but hadn't made the connection to this project until Mucca suggested it. Then I wasn't sure it would work. But it totally did. :D

The eyes are sorta turquoise/teal? Depends on lighting I guess. I felt like they weren't quite right but I'm really glad you think they work. :D

Dress was way fun. I really do hope I can eventually make her one of her other outfits. Will probably need to go shopping though, or collect the right materials over time. (Such a hardship. I love doing that. LOL.)
