mimm: (knitting)

Hi. :) Today would be my posting day, but alas, this post is going to be more of a placeholder than a proper post, because I'm made of fail. I have a B5-themed potholder next to me. In a few days, when I manage to take an actual picture of it and create a chart for others to use, I'll add them here. Right now I don't have access to a camera or a good picture editor to do the chart. Instead, you'll get a few random facts in written form.

A crocheted potholder with a simple B5-style '5' on it.
Hook: 3,5mm / US 4 / UK 9
Yarn: Two different colours of scrap yarn. Suggested knitting tension for this yarn is 18 stitches/26 rows = 10cm/4", but as this is crocheted it doesn't pay that big a role. Any yarn and an appropriate hook works.
Size: Mine ended up 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8") but, depending on your preferences, you can make them bigger by adding stitches or widening the border.

ETA: Pics finally added!

So, here's a pic of two potholders. I chose these colours to fit the colours in my apartment, but obviously you can pick your own favourites.

And here's a hand-drawn chart for the logo. I couldn't get anything pretty with any of my pic editors, so I ended up taking a photo of my notebook page. I worked on it a bit to make the ink look darker. I hope it's visible enough.

A few notes on the pattern:

I can't write a proper pattern, but if you feel like making something similar, here's what I did. I started with 35 chain stitches and worked in basic double-crochet. First, two rows with black. On the third one I started the pattern, carrying the black yarn inside the coloured stitches and later vice versa (Google tapestry crochet and you'll get more info, it's really very easy). When the pic was done, I did two more black rows to match the bottom.

For finishing, I did one dc round with black, all around the potholder, then changed into the coloured yarn. With that, I did one round of dc, then in the corner I did 15 ch for the loop, and finished with one more round of coloured yarn, covering the loop with enough dc to make it look okay. Most loose yarn ends can be tucked inside the dc rows while you crochet (tapestry style), so I only had the very last end to tuck in with a hook when I was done. Minimal finishing = yaye.

If there's anything else you want to ask, go ahead and poke me. :) I'd be happy to help if I can.

While I'm much more of a knitter than a crocheter (I dabbled in crochet in elementary school, oddly enough, but that was years ago), I'll definitely have to try my hand at your potholder. Fannish projects are fun. :)

Great! I am no domestic goddess, but I will send on to my mom with a strong hint at preferred Christmas presents!

You=WIN.

I don't crochet, but now I'm scheming about adapting some of the B5 logos into knitting charts. Maybe a black Psi Corps beanie...since they already know what's in my head anyway.

Hey, when you get those logos adapted, I'd love to see them... and make them myself. I need more B5 stuff in my life.

That's so awesome! Man, I wish I had crafty abilities beyond my sixth grade making of beady animals.
