mimm: (knitting)
[personal profile] mimm posting in [community profile] babylon5_love
Two years ago I crocheted a pair of B5 pot holders. When I signed up this year, I was set out to do another fannish craft project and I had one specific project in mind. Well, turns out I made something completely different. The funny thing is that it's something that was actually mentioned in the comments, though I didn't realize that until I started writing this update. ;D

This is just a prototype. As in, the badge is just a rough version of what I want. I'm planning on making a whole set consisting of a hat, a cowl and a pair of mittens. Or should I make gloves instead, because, you know? Anyway, there'll be more than just this one piece, but I ran out of time. Also, it's still very warm and summery here, so winter clothing isn't the most fun stuff to knit at the moment.

Without further babbling, I bring you a knitted Psi Corps hat. No, I'm not going to model it myself. This isn't quite the teddy bear but it's a teddy bear. ;) In any case, he's much better at modeling than me.

Materials:

Yarn: Red Heart Denver (dk weight, 100% acrylic so it doesn't itch) in black
Needles: 3mm and 3.5mm (US3 ad US4)
Other stuff:
A needle for weaving in the yarn ends
Small pieces of fabric
A pair of scissors and some pen and paper/a printer for the omega sign
Glue, a needle and some thread for sewing
Lots of patience (cutting the sign out of soft fabric is a bitch)

The hat:

This adult-sized, slouchy hat took only 38 grams of yarn, so not a lot. As per usual, I didn't have a pattern, because I've knitted about a ton of hats since I was a kid, so I just winged it. I can say that I started with 110 stitches, then after the knit 3, purl 2 ribbing I increased between the purled stitches (22 x 1) and continued knitting in the round with those 132 stitches. As for the decreasing bit, I decreased 12 stitches per round every few rounds. That's as specific as I can get without unraveling the whole thing.

The badge:

The badge is made from various pieces of clothing I'd otherwise throw away. The yellow comes from a t-shirt, the black from trousers. As the yellow jersey is a bit see-through and doesn't work well against the black by itself, it's lined with thin white cotton that I cut from a shirt. A great choice even for someone with the tightest of budgets. :)

Next up, I'm going to start planning the cowl and whether to use the same badge there or do something different. I also need to redo the badge until I get it to look exactly the way I want. Anyone have any ideas?
